Preview:
The Adelaide Strikers’ first 2019-20 Big Bash League match finished in a no result, while the Perth Scorchers are 1-1 after two outings.
Jonathan Wells (55* off 32), Jake Weatherald (42 off 33) and Alex Carey (45 off 40) steered the Strikers to 5/161 in Canberra against the Thunder. The match was controversially called off just four balls short of a Thunder victory as bushfire smoke engulfed Manuka Oval.
The Scorchers suffered a first-up eight-wicket loss to the Sixers at the SCG after being bowled out for 131. Cameron Green top-scored with a modest 36 off 32, while Englishman Chris Jordan took 2/13 from three overs.
But Perth got off the mark at home with an 11-run victory over the Renegades on Saturday. A sizzling 56 not out off 22 balls from skipper Mitch Marsh and 51 off 37 from Cameron Bancroft lifted the Scorchers to 7/196. Fawad Ahmed (2/22) played a vital role as the Renegades came up short.
Both sides picked up a home BBL win over the other last season. The Scorchers powered to a seven-wicket win in Perth on Boxing after skittling the Strikers for just 88.
The Strikers responded with a five-wicket victory at Adelaide in February. Wells (69 off 42) and Rashid Khan led the way for the hosts, while Josh Inglis (55 off 37) top-scored for the vanquished Scorchers.
The Scorchers’ batting performance on the weekend is difficult to ignore. The Strikers are yet to have a full hit-out and that lack of cohesion could cost them.
Look to Weatherald (Strikers) and Bancroft (Scorchers) as the best Top Batsman options.
