The sheen of the Blues’ fairytale start to Super Rugby Aotearoa is wearing off thanks to consecutive losses after their Round 4. They were gallant but ultimately outclassed in a 26-15 loss to the Crusaders in Christchurch, before going down 29-27 in a Wellington thriller against the Hurricanes.
The Chiefs, meanwhile, are 0-5. After losing to all four Kiwi rivals by 1-12 margins in the opening four rounds, they came out of the bye with an agonising 33-31 loss to the Highlanders last Sunday. The Chiefs bottled a 31-7 lead and conceded the match-winning try after the bell.
The Blues are searching for rare back-to-back wins over the Chiefs, following on from their stirring 24-12 victory in Hamilton in Round 2.
The Chiefs’ 14-match unbeaten streak against the Blues came to an end via a 23-8 loss at Eden Park last year. It was one of only two times in the last 16 encounters between the nearby rivals decided by a 13-plus margin. The Hamilton-based outfit carved out a come-from-behind 37-29 win in Auckland in Round 1 of the 2020 Super Rugby season.
The Chiefs keep finding new ways to lose but look the better value option against the line. The gap between the four teams not named the Crusaders remains razor-thin and the Blues are still vulnerable.
