Preview:

North Melbourne travels to the scenic Drummoyne Oval in Sydney’s inner-West to face the GWS Giants for a confrence cross-over match in a game that should be considered match of the round.

The Kangaroos may have only played one game in its AFLW history but are already fancied to win this year’s AFLW premiership (the favourite at $3.25) and for good reason.

In its first AFLW hitout against Carlton at North Hobart Oval last week, North Melbourne had 17 shots on goal which was the highest for any team in the first Round and thumped the Blues by 36 points.

North’s midfielders Ashleigh Riddel and Emma Kearney led the way and the Roos managed to get out to a 24 point lead after kicking three unanswered goals in the second quarter of last weeks match and had little trouble against Carlton.

The Roos recruits such as former Magpies Jasmine Garner, Emma King, Mo Hope and Jessica Duffin impressed and led the way for most of the match and showed that North Melbourne means business in this competition.

For the Giants, it was a case of not being able to hold on to a lead in their match against the Brisbane Lions last weekend.

GWS went down by two points to last years Grand Finalists as Lion Jess Wuetschner kicked three out of the four goals to defeat the Giants last weekend.

At half-time of last weekends match the Giants were seven points up but allowed Brisbane to kick three goals in the second half of the match and ultimately win the game.

In a thrilling final quarter, Giants Irish recruit Cora Staunton kicked a goal late in the last quarter to bring GWS within a point late in the game but time had the better of them.

Had GWS not chipped the ball inside their 50 within the last few minutes of the term, they could have snatched back the lead and the game but the Lions defence was too good for them.

GWS were held to 23 inside ’50s in last weeks game – the fewest of any side in AFLW Round One.

Two-time under 18 All-Australian Alyce Parker was amongst the Giants best with 18 disposals and their midfield looks strong with Courtney Gum, Jess Dal and Alicia Eva combining well.

While GWS has the talent to be an excellent AFLW side, North Melbourne’s star-studded lineup and what appears to be a very high scoring and attacking style of play should be simply too good for the Giants this Friday night.
