Melbourne Stars vs Melbourne Renegades Preview
In the grips of a COVID crisis, Melbourne Stars back up just 24 hours after a loss to Perth Scorchers for a vital derby showdown against Melbourne Renegades.
The 3-4 Stars’ list of unavailable players last night included internationals Marcus Stoinis, Joe Burns, Adam Zampa, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Andre Russell. But a line-up bolstered by local replacements put up a valiant fight in a 50-run loss to the high-flying Scorchers.
Qais Ahmad (2/26) was the pick of the Stars bowlers as Perth racked up 8/180. Joe Clarke (52 off 32) posted his third straight half-century in a 78-run opening stand with new inclusion Thomas Rogers (32 off 25). But the depleted Stars ultimately slumped from an outside chance at 4/115 in the 15th over to 130 all out.
The 1-5-1 Renegades have plenty of problems of their own, losing five straight matches after their first-up eclipse of the Strikers. Hammered by the Scorchers (8 wickets) and Hurricanes (85 runs) post-Christmas, the Renegades’ New Year’s Day clash with the heavyweight Sixers was washed out.
Mackenzie Harvey and Sam Harper have been solid contributors with the bat, but the likes of Aaron Finch and Nic Maddinson are struggling after producing an early-season fifty apiece.
The BBL|10 also-rans split last season’s derbies. Nick Larkin and Stoinis both posted 43 off 32 balls to lead the Stars to a 6-wicket win with five balls left, after Sam Harper (63 off 52) had led the Renegades to 150.
The ’Gades turned the tables three days later. Larkin (61* off 47) top-scored in the Stars tally of 6/158, but Mackenzie Harvey’s brilliant 47 not out off 21 balls engineered a last-over victory at Marvel Stadium.
With a number of the Stars’ big guns slated to be unavailable again, the Renegades are unfamiliar $1.76 favourites. Nevertheless, I rate the Stars a genuine chance – but a continuation of Clarke’s hot streak is essential.
