Melbourne Storm vs Penrith Panthers Preview
The Penrith Panthers finally lost at home with the Eels pulling off a 22-20 upset at BlueBet Stadium. As for the Melbourne Storm, with their 42-6 win over the Dragons, they’ve scored the most points through nine rounds in NRL history.
Craig Bellamy has responded to Ryan Papenhuyzen’s injury by moving Nick Meaney to fullback and Dean Ieremia to the wing. Remis Smith is also out for the Storm with Marion Seve into the centres. For the Panthers, Scott Sorensen is back and replaces Matt Eisenhuth this week.
This is the game we’ve been waiting for this season. With or without Papenhuyzen, this is an NRL blockbuster. The Panthers got the job done last year before winning the Grand Final but the Storm have been the form side of the competition so far in 2022. The Panthers will be up for the grind in the middle. They’re the best yardage team in the NRL and apply constant pressure better than any other side. Meanwhile, the Storm are scoring from anywhere on the field. They’re averaging 37.2 points per game but only 22.3 tackles inside the opposition’s 20-metre line. Both teams will be eager to make a statement, and in front of what will be a packed Magic Round crowd on Saturday night, there will be a bit of an Origin atmosphere to this one. Expect a safe start with neither wanting to make the first error. James Fisher-Harris, Moses Leota, Jesse Bromwich and Nelson Asofa-Solomona will have a huge say on this match early. So too will Api Koroisau and Harry Grant as the pair use their deception and guile to create tiny advantages around the ruck. While the Storm are incredible with the ball, the Panthers have been the NRL’s best defensive team over the last three seasons. Regardless of the final result, this game will be close from start to finish.
